I like this place for Mexican. Combo fajita quesadilla's are the bomb!! Great flavor and guy at checkout makes me laugh. We go here about twice a week!

To be clear, I pretty much hate almost everything about the Southside of Des Moines. This is the exception to that rule. Every time I've been to Old West, regardless of the time of day, they are packed and still manage to maintain extraordinarily fast service and fresh, delicious food. Their prices are extremely low for the quality received, their portions are generous and their staff is attentive without being invasive. A great place to enjoy a meal and a liberally tequila-laden margarita without putting a dent in your wallet.

Came here for lunch with the family. Ordered steak fajitas with pineapple. The waiter repeated back to me seafood fajitas and I said, no just steak. When the food came out, it was seafood fajitas, when I pointed out I ordered steak, the waiter started arguing with me that he knows I ordered seafood and I got what I ordered. I had to repeat several times and request steak fajitas before my sister asked the waiter why was he arguing with me about my order when I was the customer. I have been to this location several times and extremely disappointed in the service today and I will not be returning.

I have eaten here a few times and I just gotta say, for a Vegan this is not the spot to hit for Mexican Food in Des Moines.. Every Meal I have had here has not been very good! Now I know people dig this place, so there must be something going right with the meat dishes but the Veggie dishes are just not good! One thing that is also super important to me for cheaper Mexican food is great chips and salsa and this is not a good place for that either! The salsa is pretty bland and the chips were under par and felt like they maybe came from a bag! The actual location is in a great spot, on Fluer and the actual restaurant even though it's getting old, is still pretty cool and has some character. They have a good selection of Mexican beers, and margaritas so it might be a good place to grab a drink before a flight out of the airport! But if your Vegan or Vegetarian, this is not the spot for you! I will give it another shot sometime but will go in with no expectations of brilliance.

We are always looking for a new favorite Mexican restaurant so we thought we'd give this one a try. The parking lot always looks rather full. The dining room area is large and open. Our server came to us quickly. Their menu is rather large and took us some time to look through. I decided to get a burrito and my husband got the Pollo Fundido. I was not very impressed with my burrito. It didn't have much flavor. My husband said his dish was ok. Needless to say, not our new favorite.

Standard Mexican fare. Nothing bad and nothing great. Reasonable price and reasonable food.

I literally drive by this place everyday and never thought much of it, I was not even curious about the food here until a co-worker mentioned how they were good. I decided to give it a try, and as of today the two times I've been here it's been to go orders so I am unsure how their service is. The interior of the establishment looks comfortable and clean. I've had there chips and salsa added to my order to try them out and they were okay, no different than other Mexican restaurants in my opinion. I also got the carne asada steak platter for my meals which was very good. It is definitely on par with other Mexican restaurants I eat at, which is a good thing. Friendly staff, good food, good price, and quick to go ordering, only positive experiences for me here!

Relaxing ambience makes the food taste even better, this is about my tenth time here so it's about time for a review, I go back time after time because I really enjoy my visits... Would definitely recommend!

On the way to the airport, needed an alternative to another bad airport burger or sandwich and this place fit the bill. Chile Colorado was pretty good, not great, but also not bad as another reviewer said. Worth stopping at again next time I'm in Des Moines. 3.5 stars.

Staff: Friendly Atmosphere: Cozy but Cramped! Food: Wow! :) Service: Quick! Cleanliness: Moderate. We enter the OLD WEST restaurant around 2pm in the afternoon and am surprised at how quickly we are sat. The place is packed. The staff quickly takes our drink orders and sets a bowl of salsa and a basket of chips in front of us. I order some queso for around $3.50 and receive a small but worth it cup of queso. Before we are finished with our chips, our food is ready and at our table. Portion size was great and food was to die for. I know what Mexican food should be having grown up in Texas with trips to San Antonio nearly every year and I was pleasantly surprised to find it in Des Moines, Iowa. A couple of downers. We were sat so close to the table next to us we felt we had to take turns with conversation. The server will ask if you want change if you pay with cash. Service was still out of this world. I highly recommend this place to anyone wanting authentic Mexican food in Des Moines, Iowa.

The absolute worst Mexican restaurant in Iowa! Tasteless in every way. And worst of all, they don't care.

    Very bland. Taco Bell-esque.

Margaritas were weak and tasted more like sour mix on the rocks, food took a long time. Overall it just taste bland compared to the other great Mexican restaurants in the des moines-ish area like El Rodeo and Cobo Sol. New to this part of town and first time customers. I'm guessing we won't come back.

Food was ok. Tamale was terrible. Server seemed drunk or stoned. Food was fast and warm. Good salsa, margaritas were weak.

This place has excellent food! Nothing fancy but very good.....especially good drinks, too. Fun atmosphere and always a cast of "interesting" diners. Go on your birthday and hear wishes in Spanish. FUN!

This place is a mystery to me. I've had lunch here many times, even regularly. The food quality and service are very good, and it's a great place for a quick, inexpensive lunch in a nice environment. I can't say the same for my three experiences there during evening hours though. Service is slow and during all three visits the food came out lukewarm, and more importantly, bland. It seems like a different owner is running the day and night shifts, but even so how does that explain a well seasoned, nicely prepared lunch and the opposite at night? I'd give it four stars plus at lunch, but as low as two stars at night. Go there for lunch but skip the dinner.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
